The course covers the theory and practice of intelligence and its relationship to American foreign policy and national security decision-making, including the analytic tools available for assessing international affairs and the problem of communicating that analysis to senior policymakers. Case studies run from the Second World War to the present and cover failures as closely as successes.

The first term of a two-term seminar, featuring guest scholars and practitioners from across the university, on how artificial intelligence may alter the basic building blocks of world order. After an introduction to the technology and its open research problems, the seminar works through seven areas where AI and adjacent technologies already raise security concerns: autonomous weapons and the character of conflict, disinformation and democratic resilience, U.S.-China competition, AI ethics and safety, AI governance, nanotechnology and quantum computing, and outer space. The aim is to give students enough technical fluency to work across the law, technology, and policy communities rather than within one of them.
